A SuperStep into the future

The goal has always been to develop a safety valve so safe, it goes beyond certifications. Our digitally driven SuperSat system does just that. And more. Its pneumatically operated actuator, 4-20 mA controller and pressure/flow transmitters control and eliminate cargo tank pressure fluctuations, ensuring continuous high-level pressure and close-to-zero VOC loss. With integrated SCADA software, you gain control over your vessel’s entire valve system and access cargo tank and vent line data. What’s more, SCADA actively monitors, reports and verifies VOC emissions during voyage to maintain regulatory compliance, protect the environment and ensure crew safety at every level.

Benefits of the new SuperSat system:

  • Reduces emissions
  • Maintains continuous pressure
  • Saves money
  • Protects the environment
  • Reduces fire hazards
  • Suppresses VOC buildup

Control pressure. Protect cargo.

SuperSat eliminates VOC loss by effectively managing and stabilising cargo tank pressure at higher levels, thus minimising VOC emissions and cargo boil-off.

Cargo tank pressure control determines whether further vapor evolution occurs or not. Managing system pressure at or above the cargo’s Saturated Vapor Pressure ensures equilibrium between the liquid and vapor phases, preventing additional VOC evaporation.

Flashing and Breathing losses follow the same underlying physics, as VOC emissions occur when a liquid with entrained gases transitions from a higher to a lower pressure environment.

When integrated into oil tanker and FPSO cargo tanks, SuperSat drastically reduces overall VOC loss throughout the entire process to a fraction of the original amount.

At pressure below SvP the formation of VOC escalates and are flashed to atmosphere.

Keeping costs low and operational capacity high

Evaporation-driven cargo loss averages 0.13%. A figure seemingly so low it would have close-to-zero financial implications. But it does. And many in our industry don’t realise it.

Consider this: An Aframax tanker carrying 114,000 tons of oil would lose USD 40,000 per voyage. And the situation worsens. Global evaporation-driven loss amounts to roughly 9 million tons per year, equivalent to 70 million barrels, resulting in a financial loss of approximately 3-3.5 billion USD annually.
Mitigating these losses requires immediate action. SuperSat minimises evaporation, lowers cargo boil-off and keeps VOC formation at bay, helping you reduce operational costs.

Meeting strict environmental requirements

Ever-increasing environmental concerns mean stricter vessel regulations. Norway already prohibits harmful tanker gas emissions, setting a precedent for similar actions globally. We are now responsible for meeting present and future legislation to ensure compliance at every level.

Our SuperSat VOCON monitors, reports and verifies all VOC gas quantities expelled from cargo storage, ensuring transparency, environmental protection and business profitability. Its engine consumption monitoring already complies with the recent EU MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, Verification) and IMO (International Maritime Organisation) Carbon Intensity indicator (CII) regulations.

This valve is not just a valve. It’s the ultimate smart valve system of the future, designed to fight GHG pollution and promise you an attractive return on investment.
