The new SuperSat system prevents VOC evaporation

By maintaining a continuous high pressure the SuperSat system reduces build-up of volatile organic compounds (VOC) reducing emissions and subsequent loss of cargo.

Evaporation of VOC during marine loading, storage and transportation of crude oil is both an environmental problem and a significant economic cost. For a standard ship such as an Aframax tanker, the economic loss during a single voyage with full tanks amounts to more than 40,000 USD. Bay Valves has co-invented the SuperSat system that consistently maintains tank pressure at a steady high, reducing the boil-off of cargo.

SuperSat – prevent evaporation and reduce loss!

By maintaining a continuous high pressure the SuperSat reduces buildup of volatile organic compounds (VOC) reducing emissions and subsequent loss of cargo.

The boil-off of cargo that evaporates through p/v-valves is increasingly problematic for the industry. Emissions are bad for the environment and a cause of loss. By preventing this loss, the SuperSat is not only an environmental sound choice for your company, it is also a solution with an attractive return on investment.

Key benefits of the new SuperSat system:

The SuperSat system continuously and without interruptions maintain cargo tank pressure at a high level working in parallel to our high velocity valves that features a negative pressure drop and functions as a last resort safety valve allowing for the higher tank pressure to be maintained without compromising safety. This is essential for VOC containment during loading and throughout the entirety of the journey. The benefits of this is to:

  • Reduce emissions
  • Maintain continuous pressure
  • Save money
  • Protect the environment
  • Reduce fire hazards
  • Suppress VOC buildup

How the SuperSat high pressure valve prevents loss of cargo

Control of the pressure within a crude oil cargo tank vapor system will determine the extent of further vapor evolution. If the pressure within the system is controlled at or above the Saturated Vapor Pressure of the cargo, then equilibrium pressure between the liquid and vapor phases is obtained, and no further VOC will evaporate.

The physics are the same for Flashing and Breathing losses, since VOC emissions occur when a liquid with entrained gases goes from higher pressure to a lower pressure. Keeping the pressure high and stable will eliminate escalated VOC loss on tankers and will, when implemented on FPSOs, reduce the total VOC loss from field to terminal to a fraction.

At pressure below SvP the formation of VOC escalates and are flashed to atmosphere.

At high pressure, the VOC are held down and won’t evaporate.

Compounds that are liquids at the initial pressure/temperature transform from a liquid into a gas/ vapor and are “flashed” from the liquid.

Stop wasting money –
reduce VOC losses today

An average loss of 0.13% of the cargo to evaporation sounds like it is next to nothing, but in an Aframax tanker carrying 114.000 tonnes oil 0.13% evaporation amounts to a loss of more than 40,000 USD per voyage.

The latest predictions indicate that as much as nine million tonnes of VOC could be emitted annually due to crude oil transport. This corresponds to about 70 million barrels of light end hydrocarbons representing a value of 3.0 to 3.5 billion USD a year.

The SuperSat reduces evaporation loss by keeping VOC formation low. Start saving today. Please contact us on how we can help you.

Built for the future to meet increasingly strict environmental requirements

As concern for the environment grows, governments are introducing stricter regulations for vessels operating within their jurisdiction. Recently introduced Norwegian legislation has banned the emission of potentially dangerous gases from tankers and it is likely that legislation that mimics these initiatives will follow around the globe.

Prepared for EU MRV & IMO Carbon intensity Indicator CII

The SuperSat VOCON system will MONITOR, REPORT & VERIFY the amount of VOC gases expelled from a cargo- or Storage tank continuously and are built to ensure transparency, environmental safety as well as profitability and ESG compliance for enterprises in the future. SuperSat is the smart valve system of the future built to fight GHG pollution and at the same time offer our clients a solution with an attractive return on investment.

The Pressure Vacuum valve (PV valve) – a marine & offshore industry workhorse

The purpose of Pressure-Vacuum (PV) valves is to protect cargo tanks from excessive over/under pressure. Due to unavoidable pressure rise during loading  as well as temperature changes during transport, changes in internal tank pressure will occur.

A PV valve facilitates the flow of small quantity vapour during Breathing/transport as well as higher flow rates during loading, thereby allowing tank atmosphere pressure to stay within a preset level.
In case of over-pressure, the High velocity valve type opens directly to the surrounding atmosphere to ensure venting at high velocity vertically, while in the case of a pressure drop below atmospheric (under-pressure), the vacuum side of the valve will draw air into the tank.
The in-line P/V valve type will in the same way keep a pre-set and stable pressure range in the cargos tanks, but will vent to and from a Flame arrester placed in a mast riser.

Full range of PV valves

PV valves from Bay Valves cover the full range of equipment needed for handling the gas side of loading, storage and off-loading i.e. PV valves and high velocity valves for use on floating storage units like FPSO, FSO, oil and chemical tankers and their service vessels – shuttle tankers and PSV.

For different vessel types, and for different cargo classifications, the exact requirements for PV valves may differ. At Bay Valves, we are always ready to advice clients on the optimal PV valve solution for the individual case.
For some key customers, we have developed more specialized solutions which we are happy to present at any given opportunity. Please use the contact page to see what we have done for others, and discuss how we may assist you.
